Statuses and tags
Status is where they are in the church. Tags are labels you invent. Workflows can watch both.
Settings → Statuses is the membership ladder (first-timer, regular, member — yours to name). Settings → Tags is free labels. Do not use tags as a second status field.

Name the statuses you actually use
On Statuses, keep the list short enough that a volunteer can pick one. Status changes can feed the follow-up pathway and workflows.

Tag for a campaign, not a life stage
Tags are for “visited Easter,” “wants baptism class,” “do not SMS.” Apply them on the person. Workflows can trigger when a tag is added.
