An unfilled role with a headcount. Members can claim it from the portal. Staff can still assign.
On an event (or service that uses volunteer roles), define roles with a target headcount. That is the unfilled slot — not a WhatsApp group. Members claim and release from the member portal. A self-signup is marked volunteered in the staff view.

Define the role and headcount
Open the event, add the volunteer role, and set how many you need. The gap is visible while it is still Tuesday.

Let members claim, or assign
Staff can still place a named person. Members claim from the portal without typing someone else's name — the session is the person.
